In the recent past, almost all rc airplanes were powered by small internal combustion engines, using liquid fuels. Models powered by electric motors were few and far between. The electric rc airplane is now becoming much more common, especially in models designed for beginning pilots.

Electric power advantages include reliability, convenience, low noise, low vibration, and lack of fuel residue (clean). The disadvantage of early systems was low power. However recent electric airplane motors, combined with advanced batteries, have increased the performance of electric rc airplanes dramatically.

In the more common Brushed motors, current switching is done using sliding contacts known as brushes. The contacts get hot and wear out over time. In Brushless motors, the switching happens electronically using a special voltage regulator (speed controller). This second type of motor and its controller are more expensive to make. Its advantages are no maintenance and higher performance.

There are three main types of batteries in use for electric airplane motors. These are Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Polymer (LiPo). LiPo batteries are lighter for a given application, but tend to be more expensive than NiCad or NiMH.

Electric rc airplane types include powered sailplanes, scale models, aerobatic models, and ducted fan (jet-type). Virtually any type of rc model can now be electric powered. Even powerful electric helicopters are now a reality. In addition, some new types of rc models have emerged that were not practical before, e.g. parkflyers and indoor flyers. For the beginner, something slow and stable is recommended for a trainer aircraft.

You may also consider simply using the electric blanket to warm the bed up before you get into it, but not actually sleeping underneath the electric blanket, instead unplugging and removing it before you go to bed. Make extra sure that the blanket never gets wet, and that you don’t use it together with any other blankets. Finally, you should replace the electric blanket every few years, or sooner if it starts to look like it is in bad condition.
For many people, though, having to deal with all these risks to use such a simple thing seems too much trouble. The best and most common alternative to the electric blanket is probably the hot water bottle, as hot water bottles cool down rather than getting warmer over time, and can be fitted with special soft covers to avoid burning you. They are also much cheaper.

You want a bed that fits your comfort level and a bed that you will feel good about. Mixing and matching just isn’t worth it for the few dollars that you will save. You are better served buying the base and mattress together because the base is built for the particular mattress that comes with the adjustable or electric adjustable bed.

For whether or not to buy a non electric adjustable bed or an electric adjustable bed is completely up to you. It all depends on what you want in an adjustable bed. If you want all the bells and whistles an electric adjustable bed would be what you’d want. It all depends on what you are looking for in an adjustable bed. The best thing to do is to look at both the non electric and the electric adjustable beds to see which features fit your needs the best.

Electric Guitars

The Electric guitar hasn’t been around nearly as long as the Acoustic and Classical guitars. In fact, the Electric guitar was created just 70 years ago (the 1930s) by Adolph Rickenbacker. Since that time, the Electric guitar has greatly evolved to the where it is today. In this article, we’ll go over the history of the Electric guitar.

The History

Guitars, or similar instruments, have been around for thousands of years. The Electric guitar was first manufactured in the 1930s by Rickenbacker. Original Electric guitars used tungsten pickups. Pickups basically convert the vibration of the strings into electrical current, which is then fed into the amplifier to produce the sound.

The very earliest Electric guitars featured smaller soundholes in the body. These guitars are known as semi-hollow body Electric guitars and still are somewhat popular today, mainly due to the fact that they are flexible guitars.

However, with the use of pickups, it was possible to create guitars without soundholes (like the Acoustic and Classical guitars have) that still had the ability to be heard, if plugged into amplifiers. These guitars are called solid body Electric guitars.

The Electric guitar’s popularity began to increase during the Big Band era of the ’30s and 40s. Due to the loudness of the brass sections in jazz orchestras, it was necessary to have guitars that could be heard above the sections. Electric guitars, with the ability to be plugged into amplifiers, filled this void.

The Electric guitar that is most prevalent today is the solid body Electric guitar. The solid body guitar was created by musician and inventor Les Paul in 1941. It is a guitar made of solid wood with no soundholes. The original solid body guitar created by Paul was very plain–it was a simple rectangular block of wood connected to a neck with six steel strings. Les Paul’s original solid body guitar shape has, of course, changed from the original rectangular shape to the more rounded shape Les Paul guitars have today.

During the 1950s, Gibson introduced Les Paul’s invention to the world. The Gibson Les Paul, as it was and still is called, quickly became a very popular Electric guitar. It has remained the most popular guitar for 50 years.

Around the same period of time, another inventor named Leo Fender came up with a solid body Electric guitar of his own. In the late 1940s, Fender introduced the Fender Broadcaster Electric guitar. The Broadcaster, which was renamed the Stratocaster, was officially introduced to the public in 1954. The Strat, as it is now known, was a very different guitar in comparison to the Les Paul. It had a different shape, different hardware and was significantly lighter. Fender’s Stratocaster Electric guitar is the second most popular guitar in the world, second to only the Les Paul.

Over the years, other companies, such as Ibanez, Jackson, Paul Reed Smith, ESP and Yamaha have all produced solid body Electric guitars of their own. However, most Electric guitars still feature the familiar shape of a Les Paul or Strat guitar.

Electric wheelchairs are very expensive and therefore, it can be a difficult decision whether to buy one. However, Medicare usually covers up to 80% of the cost of electric wheelchairs. Any secondary insurance company will usually cover the rest.

To obtain Medicare for electric wheelchairs, certain criteria have to be met:

1. The person’s condition is such that, a wheelchair or scooter is a must for mobility.
2. The person cannot operate a manual wheelchair, hence an electric wheelchair or an electric scooter is required.
3. The person is capable of safely operating the controls of a wheelchair or scooter.
4. The person can safely transfer in and out of a wheelchair or scooter.
5. The person has adequate trunk stability to safely ride a wheelchair or scooter.
6. The person has not purchased a wheelchair or scooter and obtained reimbursement for that purchase within the last five 5 years.
7. Medicare must be the primary insurance carrier for filing the initial claim with them.
8. If Medicare had covered the cost of a manual wheelchair previously, that chair should be returned to the company for claiming the cost of an electric wheelchair from Medicare.

If all of these criteria are met, then the person seeking support from Medicare should provide a description of the functional limitations affecting the patient, which supports the medical necessity of the POV; patient diagnosis requiring the POV. This information must be furnished on letterhead or other documentation, which identifies the specialty of the ordering physician. The recommendation for a wheelchair for which reimbursement is requested needs to be ordered by a neurologist, orthopedic surgeon, rheumatologist, or rehabilitation medicine specialist.

The idea of having an electric car makes so much sense. Imagine workers in a large, contained industrial area using electric cars to transport material and employees from one area to the next. At the end of the run they would simply plug the car in and charge it back up. Imagine the same electric car on college campuses across the country. Students would drive from class to class and then back to their dorm or apartment. As part of their regular routine, they would plug in their electric car for a recharge.

Imagine too these quiet electric cars in planned communities transporting residents to the golf course, to the club house or around the neighborhood to visit with friends. The employees, the students, the residents would be able to drive day after day without the need for gasoline. The electric cars would operate quietly without emitting polluting toxic fumes. The area would be cleaner and quieter. This has to be a radical new idea, right?

Actually the electric car has been around in one form or another since 1832 when the Scotsman Robert Anderson invented a rather crude carriage that was powered by battery cells that were not rechargeable. Not practical for long-term use, but it was the beginning of a revolutionary concept.

Shortly after Anderson’s success, an American, Thomas Davenport, build a practical electric engine for a small train. The effort was truly global and the next step came from a French scientist, Gaston Plante, who invented the rechargeable storage battery. In 1881 the battery was improved and became the same basic lead-acid battery that is still used in today’s cars.

Electric cars were all the scientific rage in the 1890s. The decade began with William Morrison building the very first successful electric auto in Iowa in 1891. He was followed by Thomas Edison in 1893. By 1897 the Pope Manufacturing Company took the concept big time with the first electric taxis in New York City. At the end of the decade, electric cars were well accepted. Approximately one-third of the cars being made were electric and the brightest minds in the industry were working on ways to improve the battery.

However, soon after, all of that changed drastically. In 1908 Henry Ford rocked the auto world with the mass-production of the gasoline-powered Model T. At first these Model Ts were difficult to start because they required a hand crank starter. In 1912 the electric car starter was invented and the gasoline-powered car was off and running at full speed.

At the time everything seemed to support the gasoline-powered car. They could travel farther than the electric car. They had better horsepower and of course gasoline was in abundant supply from American sources. So the electric car faded from the scene.

It would be more than 40 years later before the public was again ready to even think about electric cars as a viable source of transportation. In the 1970s the price of oil was rising at alarming rates and the political turmoil in the Middle East caused American to once again look inward for answers.

Some attempts were made in the 1970s but with limited commercial awareness. These electric car models could not compete with the long-range and power that drivers had come to demand of their cars. By 2006 a few electric cars and a few hybrid models were introduced. The rising gas prices that year helped to spur public attention. The most commercially successful company has been Toyota with their Prius line.

It isn’t that consumers don’t recognize the need for alternatives to high-priced, volatile foreign oil and gas; they have simply become too accustom to the power and convenience of gasoline-powered cars and trucks. We are a very mobile society and very unwilling to compromise on that in the ways that an electric car would involve.

Non slip mats can be ideal for use when transferring on a slippery floor. There are several types of mobility aids designed to help with getting in and out of a car. These include handles which attach to the window frame, and a bar that attaches to the door latch and provides a strong secure way of getting in and out of a car.

4. Bed assists are useful mobility aids for those who spend a lot of time in bed or for those who struggle to get in and out of bed. Popular devices include mattress elevators which raise the head end of the mattress to provide additional comfort and reduce the risk of pressure sores, adjustable backrests, and cushions for raising the legs and feet. A footboard is a simple device which is attached to the bed, and can prevent a person from slipping down the bed whilst in a sitting position. A rope ladder hoist can be used to help with sitting up in bed. The end of the rope ladder is fastened to the bed legs, whilst the user raises him or herself, by gripping the ladder rungs using a hand over hand movement.

5. A bathlift can provide a great deal of independence for someone who is currently struggling to bathe, or finds getting in and out of the bath a problem. Bathlifts are controlled by a handset that lowers and raises the bath lift. If there is not enough charge in the handset to raise the bathlift, the bathlift will not lower. This means that the user will never be stranded in the bath. Bathlifts are normally portable and can be folded when not in use, and often have washable covers for convenience.

People who are buying online have grown dramatically over the last few years. Consumers purchase a variety of different products, and with the trend as it is; elderly people are becoming more confident to pay for their products online as they understand money can be saved in comparison to prices in high street shops.

As any business would know, it is important to keep up to date with current market prices so products can remain competitive. The Help the Aged website seem to be selling mobility scooters at more than double the price of other online vendors. So why are the prices of the mobility scooters on the Help the Aged website so expensive?

The Help the Aged website have a section where people can come and ask questions and post answers to other peoples threads. One person challenged Help the Aged on how they justify their prices considering there are similar websites selling the same product and offering a similar service at half the price.

Peter Olsson: Help the Aged E -Commerce Marketing Manager, replied and said that Help the Aged started selling mobility scooters in February 2004 to counter act against the common “Unethical Sales Practices” of other sellers in the industry. Peter Olsson suggests that his own research shows that the prices Help the Aged sell their mobility scooters at are infact, “very competitive”. Mr Olsson states that he is aware, rock bottom rates are advertised in tabloids and other media. However, he encourages in his reply to remember “there’s a wide range of specifications available on the market so people get what they pay for”. He uses an example stating that some are sold as new although they have been refurbished.

Mr Olsson said Help the Aged would advise anyone only to deal with “Reputable vendors” in order to avoid deceptive sales tactics to prevent a disappointing purchase. “If something sounds too cheap to be true, it usually is.” Although we could agree with this statement in general, in some cases this may not be correct. So, are we understand from Mr Olsson, that the Help the Aged website is a reputable vendor to purchase Mobility Scooters but to be aware of commercial websites offering mobility scooters at cheaper prices?

Companies such as Factory Outlet Scooters, www.factoryoutletscooters.co.uk sell brand new mobility scooters at low cost prices. Are we to believe that this company is not reputable because their scooters are sold at, in some cases, half the price of Help the Aged? I don’t believe so.

In response to Mr Olsson, a gentleman posted a reply. He said he himself had worked in the industry selling mobility products for the last 15 years, and that he was “Very amused, yet saddened” at the reply Mr Olsson offered. He did not think it was appropriate for a well known charity to be involved in this commercial enterprise which by its inference gives backing to an associate company selling items for high prices which may lead a potential customer away from a competitor selling the same product at half the price. He agrees with Mr Olsson that there are bad companies around and added that they sell scooters and other aids at inflated prices, and suggests the role of Help the Aged as a charity should be to educate and guide the elderly to the best buys, the best prices and companies who are ethical.

The Office of Fair Trading have currently launched a campaign to help consumers, such as the elderly, to fend off doorstop sellers who are selling high price items, such as mobility scooters and mobility products, to deal with high-pressure sales tactics. The campaign is backed by a number of groups, including Help the Aged.

Help the Aged have their heart in the right place, and we know they do a lot of good work for the elderly, but in this case, they possibly need to be more aware of realistic prices that the elderly can make their purchases online and perhaps recognise genuine services offered by other online companies in the market industry.

You must have observed the growing use of electric wheelchairs, powerchairs and mobility scooters by people who have in the past been using the manual wheelchair. If you’re still using a manual wheelchair maybe it’s because you’re not so sure about the safety of the wheelchair batteries used to power these electric wheelchairs. Let’s take a closer look.
Wheel chair batteries come in many different types and models. They’re all designed to meet the varying demands of different powered wheelchairs in one way or another. You’ll find many manufacturers of wheelchair batteries, for all types of wheelchairs, powerchairs and mobility scooters. No matter who makes the battery, they all basically fall into 3 different types of batteries available.
Let’s look at the features you’ll want in you’re battery to give you the longest, most trouble-free service.
Wheel Chair Battery Features…what to look for:
Although they’re the least expensive of all the different types of wheelchair batteries, ordinary wet type (lead acid) batteries are not recommended for most uses in power mobility devices. Not only for the maintenance inconvenience they have, but mostly for the possibility of an acid leak if the wheelchair, power chair or mobility scooter should tip over. These lead/acid type batteries are seen less and less in today’s mobility devices.
A wheelchair battery can come in various sizes and power ratings. The higher the amperage rating of the battery the more potential power it has to power you around in your chair. The ideal battery would be one that is compact, with a high power-to-weight ratio (Low battery weight vs. high amperage).
The lighter the battery the better. However, you should be careful not to compromise power just to save a few pounds of weight.
So, what are the basic types of wheelchair batteries?
* Gel type: Advantages… can’t leak if tipped over…approved for airline travel…no maintenance required
* AGM (Glass mat type…most expensive): Advantages…can’t spill or leak…approved for airline travel…no maintenance required…low self-discharge rate (3% per month)
* Wet type (lead/acid): Advantage: cheapest of all types
As with most purchases, determine how you’ll be using your powered device. A prime consideration should be safety…and, if safety is the highest concern than that would most likely eliminate the wet (lead/acid) type of wheelchair battery. That leaves the gel and AGM types.
If cost is the main concern, then the wet (lead/acid) type would be your first choice. Hope this helps.

If you’re in the market for wheel chairs, and really, why else would you be here, then I hope you have considered the many options that are available in motorized scooters and power chairs. There are many style options available to the average consumer today that haven’t been traditionally available in the past.
In addition to the many styles and mobility options that are available, there are many payment plans that are available to enable the average consumer in getting the chair that will best suit their lifestyle needs as well as their mobility desires. The old wheel chairs of yester year don’t offer the maneuverability that the modern scooters and power chairs offer, not to mention they aren’t nearly as practical as they can’t really handle that many terrain options.

Impact of curb ramps on people with mobility impairments

Curb ramps are designed to provide access to people who use wheeled forms of mobility. Without curb ramps, people who use wheelchairs would not be able to independently access the sidewalk and street. However, not all wheelchairs perform the same on a curb ramp. Common types of wheeled mobility devices include manual and powered wheelchairs, as well as powered scooters. Each type of technology will benefit from different aspects of the curb ramp design. For example, most powered mobility devices are maneuverable in small spaces due to their short wheelbase. Scooters have a longer wheelbase but have manual steering, and most can perform a three-point turn in tight spaces. Manual wheelchairs can turn on their own wheelbase but are difficult to steer on a cross slope as they tend to turn downhill.

For many people with mobility impairments, curb ramps are not critical to access. In fact, in some situations curb ramps make it more difficult for some people with mobility impairments to navigate. Crutches and canes are sized to fit the individual user so that the energy required for ambulation is minimized on a hard, level surface. Use of these types of walking aids is more difficult on sloped surfaces such as curb ramps. Cane, walker, or crutch users must lower their body forward when going downhill. On uphill slopes, the cane or crutch must be lifted higher and placed on the surface. The user must have the strength to lift his or her body up over the supporting device. Widening the crosswalk to allow people to use either the curb or the curb ramp will enhance access for cane and crutch users who are not comfortable traveling on a sloped surface.
