Accommodations are a means to achieve equal rights. Everybody has the right to employment and so to ensure that right, employers have to make reasonable accommodations that would prevent people from working who could otherwise do the job.

There is no equal rights protection, per se, in the Consitution and an attempted amendment to add this specifically was defeated. However, the equal protection clause does the job pretty well.

Some accommodations are considered part of the equal rights bundle, but there is a LOT of wiggle room in terms of when these accommodations can actually be compelled. For example, U.S. states, it seems, are not required to accommodate workers with disabilities despite provisions in the federal (over-arching) Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Interestingly, since the ADA, there are now fewer workers with disabilities in the workplace than ever. Employers prefer not the run the risk of an expensive ADA lawsuit, I guess.

I’ve gone through all of the government and the “nonprofits” and they refuse any help because I don’t have the right “disability” or just have so low wages that are impossible to live on. If you have the name, it would great. Maybe they would have some help for me. I’m UNABLE to do telemarketing.

The federal government is good at promoting itself. Too bad there’s no follow-through and no managers being held accountable. Year after year, there are campaigns to hire persons with disabilities. nothing changes and, in fact, the numbers continue to get worse!

I absolutely love this message! It’s about time someone speaks out about this! I know I have cerebral palsy, and I think that maybe that has had some effect on me getting hired. I However am medication now to control the involuntary movement. So I think that this will help me land that next job. I did however work at Safeway for almost three years but the work was to tough, I’m also going back to school as well!

@siglmgga I can really understand what people with disabilities gpo through on a daily basis.
Several months ago, I severed my left leg in a freak home accident, and now I’m in severe pain even after the surgery and metal screws. I’m not strong enough to do this on my own.
I support people with disabilities, but sometimes the pain gets so unbearable I just want God to take me.

I’m not talking suicide, but I just want to quit! I want to be a Vegatable.

@pluto4847 I’m sure that most of us reading want you to find support and the comforts, someplace, that you deserve - keep trying. Many of us also have felt similarly sometimes, healing takes a long time. One thing your comment does so well is to illustrate that most people are “temporarily” able, and disability comes in many forms, at any age, sometimes on top of very limited resources. Perhaps a local nurse will understand and try to find patience and more resources for you.

And a physical disability just does not slow you down physically, it impairs your fiances, and hurts you emotionally.
I did everything my doctors advised. I am better now, but I still relapse.
It got so bad at times I was screaming in severe agony–the likes of someone in hellfire.

I do get better, but I’m not 100%. I get inpatient with the healing process.

I will be seeing my primary care doctor next week, and I’ll explain how it has effected me.

@pluto4847 bro, being a veggie is definitely NOT the way to be. think of how you would be effecting all those who know and care about you. do you really think that’s fair? anyways, i was a veggie once. i was in a freak car accident and had to be air-lifted to a hospital specializing in the care of people with severe brain injuries. i wasn’t supposed to live or be able to use my left side, but here i am! completely socialized back into society with extremely minor quirks.

Thanks for the comments. I am doing much better now. I was just very inpatient and scared at the time of my accident.
I won’t lie to you. I’m not 100%. I’ll never be 100% ever again, but I’m at least 70% of my old self. No more playing basletball. No more running, but I can do other things.
I’m limping around now with a cain, but I’m very happy I came this far.
Now I fear the snow. I’ll have to be extra careful this winter.

A lot of disabled people (USA) who use wheelchairs don’t work because if working their benefits would be cut. Some do, however have a car (even a large clunker) with the attachment on the back to put their wheelchair on. Some employers allow their employees to help someone get out of their car and onto the wheelchair if that is needed. Some take a special county (small van) bus that has a lift on it. Some busses have lifts on them and allow you to enter from the middle of the bus (and you’d have a buss pass you can flash the driver with). And then there are some who have enough money to buy their own vehicle that has a ramp (it’s like a van). One end result is that maybe (depending on the type of job you do) you can work from home (there’s video now so you can attend meetings and give your input) and you can submit your data by fax or even two of you get into the same account to work from. It never hurts to ask, plus more and more people are working at home to get out of the traffic jam (so it might not be considered disability it might just be considered progress and new technology).

i had a friend who used one and she was fine. anyway, i think you probably kinda answered your own question. i don’t know the brand Septa. i know some buses have “lift” services. and stuff like that. other than that

you can have an automobile or vehicle just like anyone else. it just needs the right equipment and special accommodations. it’s perfectly acceptable for you to have that!

I am in wheelchair and do not use a car. I use public transportation, it is not horribly comfortable when the bus is full but it isn’t uncomfortable either. Some cities also offer taxis that can accommodate wheelchair users

You are a wheelchair user not a wheelchair person. People who are chair users all over the world use public transportation. It is not always the easiest thing to do, and not always very comfortable, but we do what we have to do to get where we want to go.

City buses are generally a great way to get around with a wheelchair. Most of the time the bus drivers are friendly and helpful while they tie down your wheelchair. A few driver’s will pretend that the lift is broken if they don’t want to deal with you. That is the exception rather than the rule.

As far as crowded buses go; it can make you feel a little self-conscious when the bus is so crowded that people have to stand. Most of the time people don’t seem to mind standing for a while. It just depends on how busy the route is that you plan to take.

My suggestions: be at the bus stop at least ten minutes early. A bus driver will leave ANYBODY that isn’t at the bus stop when they pull up. Have your fare ready. Do whatever you can to speed up the process of getting loaded and secured on the bus. Bus driver’s do appreciate it when you try to save them time.

I’ve seen a lot of things done to support disabilities-

When I was at the university, there would be contests where one would have to button a blouse with one hand the fastest, draw a picture with their toes, try to write their name with a blind fold, etc. to try to have normal people live the challenges of others and give them an “autism support” pencil/shirt, etc if they could do it.

You could also bring in a speaker who has worked through a disability against all odds or interview people with them and put together a documentary:

Kristine, Thanks for sharing this with your audience. It took a lot of courage and strength, but you did it! You are very different, in the fact that you can see the good in things. imperfections are always hard to deal w/ as a child but i feel growing up, you deal w/ less immature and more understanding adults that, hopefully, grow to accept people’s character and surpasses their physical imperfections. i was a fat kid. i mean if back in the days, i obesity was considered, i’d be the first to be diagnosed, children aren’t too accommodating to differences but as we grow older, i guess the purpose we choose to surround ourselves helps eliminate the pain we get.
